Très Imperial

Just ran across a curious claim about President Bush in the cover article of the May 2005 issue of National Geographic, which is all about poisons and poisoning. In the very last paragraph of the article it says:

The Japanese emperor hasn't used a food taster in years, though George W. Bush has used Navy mess specialists to handle the job.

Could it really be true that Bush is using a food taster?! If so, he truly is taking on all the trappings of an emperor! And it wouldn't be the first time a soldier has had to put his life on the line to cover George Bush's ass.

I haven't been able to find any corroboration of the food taster. Anybody know of any?

This article, which I've quoted the interesting part below:

Time for a White House taster?
President Bush likes to portray his White House as a working man's shop, but it might be time for a touch of royalty. Like employing a food taster. That's because there are worries that terrorists might try to poison the White House food supply. "It's quite a going concern," an insider reveals to Whispers. Since 9/11, the East Wing kitchen has had to refuse free samples and limit deliveries to only the most trusted purveyors. And that curbs what the first family and their dinner guests can be served. "Our watchwords have always been what's the most seasonal, what's the most interesting," explains Executive Chef Walter Scheib. "Unfortunately, some of our ability to get different products is limited by security concerns." Even with the security-approved food suppliers, the kitchen has to use subterfuge. "We can't let them know where it's going," says a Bushie. That doesn't stop Scheib, who's skilled in finding new treats, like the Texas goat cheese he just discovered. "Texas," he says. "Who knew?"

And a big argument on arianna's blog, but no real links. I'm surprised NG published that without any real evidence, but I'm just finding denials from the whitehouse and the like.

Well, darn it, even if it's not true, it's a great urban legend! I'm glad I could do my part to spread it around.

I can see the taster's commanding naval officer giving him the assignment: "Johnson, you like eating, don't you?"

"Yes, sir."

"Well, I've got a little mission for you."

Well, I do remember when he went to England, he brought his own chef. I thought it was because we was afraid to eat "fourin" food, but it could be because he is afraid of poisonings. The article I found is true, and they food they feed the president does come from trusted sources... and a trusted chef. So, in essence, it is true... his chef is his taster.
